the best family vacations in california?

I need info on some good vacations for two older women and a 6 year old, preferably in California, but Oregon is a possibility. Money is a huge consideration. We will be driving ourselves.

What about going to San Francisco. So much of what is interesting is absolutely free–Golden Gate, Chinatown, Fishermans Wharf etc. Kids can have a great time in city parks, playgrounds & museums.
